This Free Veterinary CPD Podcast is produced by Davies Veterinary Specialists with Ian Battersby and Pedro Oliviera discussing intervention techniques for cardiac arrhythmias.
We hear a detailed account of how an initial assessment of arrhythmias is carried out using 3 catheters in different positions on cardiac muscle. These catheters record the direction of electrical activity in the heart which helps identify and localise the problem. They are also used to introduce electricity to cardiac muscle, and its direction of flow within the heart provides further information.
Once a specific diagnosis has been made, Pedro Oliviera explains the mechanisms available for treatment. In particular we hear more about how heat ablation is used to destroy problem tissue and it’s success rate with various conditions.
Drug therapy for cardiac arrhythmias vs intervention is also discussed along with what the future might hold for this kind of therapy in veterinary patients.
